SOXHLET EXTRACTION

A Soxhlet extraction unit is a laboratory apparatus used to extract soluble compounds from solid materials using a continuous solvent circulation process. It is widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, environmental, food, and agricultural laboratories for applications such as fat analysis, pesticide residue testing, essential oil extraction, and compound isolation from plant materials. This method allows thorough extraction without the need for repeated manual solvent addition.

The system typically consists of a heating mantle, round-bottom flask, Soxhlet extractor body, and condenser. The solvent is heated in the flask, evaporates, and then condenses in the extractor chamber, where it repeatedly washes the sample, dissolving the desired compounds. The solvent containing the extract then siphons back into the flask, and the cycle continues automatically. Soxhlet extraction ensures efficient recovery of target compounds with minimal solvent waste and is a reliable and time-tested technique for solid-liquid extraction in laboratories.
